27 John S. Candler, director of em ployee and community relations, served as master of ceremonies. He is shown at the conclusion of the program while at right the plaque presented to Local 1971 is admired by members of the audience. Invocation was offered by the Rev. William Arrington of Film Slitting. Group President Garza Baldwin, Jr., reads the plaque he presented to Local 1971 United Paperworkers International in appreciation of the Union’s involvement and commit ment to the location’s safety effort. Paul Seagle, Local 1971 president, accepted the award. The program September 22 commemorated “a vastly improved safety attitude,” and the record high attainment of 5,000,000 injury free worker hours at the Ecusta Paper and Film plants. BALDWIN (cont’cl) Pisgah Forest employees exceeded five million worker hours without a disabling injury. Performance such as this does indeed demonstrate that we have placed safety at the heart of our business. You are to be congratulated for your achievement, and challenged for renewed dedication to the attain ment of even higher levels of suc cess in the control of human suffering and the conservation of human resources. We have made a vast improve ment this year in this essential aspect of our work, but we can and must strive to do even better. We can do it if we continue to get total commitment and total involvement. We need that from all of the people, all of the time. We, of course, look to our Tech nical Department to design a safe work place. We look to our Main tenance Department to maintain our facilities safely. And, finally, we look to everyone to perform in accordance with accepted safety standards. When I say we look to everyone to perform according to accepted safety standards, I mean everyone, including office per sonnel and sales personnel, just as much as those directly involved in production. Safety, as I see it, is a vital con cern to management, to labor, and to government. Each of us has a responsibility to conduct ourselves in such a way as to make safety happen.
